  9. Upgrade and 6.0 Upgrade.

  32. INTRODUCTION

  35. The WINA20.386 file is a read-only file that is copied to the root
  36. directory on your hard disk (startup) drive when you set up MS-DOS 5
  37. Upgrade or MS-DOS 6 Upgrade on a computer that is capable of running
  38. Microsoft Windows in 386 enhanced mode. Microsoft Windows version 3.0
  39. cannot run in 386 enhanced mode without this file. You do not need the
  40. WINA20.386 file if you run any other version of Microsoft Windows, or
  41. if you do not run Microsoft Windows version 3.0 in 386 enhanced mode.

  45. HOW CAN I TELL IF I NEED THE WINA20.386 FILE?

  48. If you do not have this file and try to run Windows version 3.0 in 386
  49. enhanced mode, the following message is generated:
  50.  
  51.   You must have the file WINA20.386 in the root of your boot drive
  52.   to run Windows in Enhanced Mode
  53.  
  54. If you see this message, use the EXPAND command to expand and copy
  55. this file from your MS-DOS installation disk to the root directory of
  56. your startup drive. The file is on Disk 3 (3.5-inch disks) and Disk 5
  57. (5.25-inch disks) for MS-DOS 5 Upgrade and Disk 1 (3.5-inch disks) and
  58. Disk 2 (5.25-inch disks) for MS-DOS 6 Upgrade. Insert your
  59. installation disk in your floppy disk drive, type the following at the
  60. MS-DOS command prompt, and press ENTER
  61.  
  62.   expand <drive>:\wina20.38_ <startupdrive>:\wina20.386
  63.  
  64. where <drive> is the floppy disk drive containing your MS-DOS
  65. installation disk and <startupdrive> is your startup drive (usually
  66. drive C). For example if your floppy disk drive is drive A and your
  67. startup drive is drive C, type the following command:
  68.  
  69.   expand a:\wina20.38_ c:\wina20.386
  70.  
  71. CAN I DELETE THE WINA20.386 FILE?
  72. ---------------------------------

  74. You can delete the WINA20.386 file from your hard disk if you do not
  75. use Microsoft Windows version 3.0 in 386 enhanced mode.
  76.  To delete the file:
  77.  
  78. 1. Remove the read-only attribute by typing the following at the MS-
  79.    DOS command prompt and pressing ENTER:
  80.  
  81.       attrib -r <startupdrive>:\wina20.386
  82.  
  83. 2. Delete the file by typing the following command:
  84.  
  85.       del <startupdrive>:\wina20.386
  86.       
  87. CAN I MOVE THE WINA20.386 FILE?
  88. -------------------------------

  90. You can move the WINA20.386 file to a new directory as follows:
  91.  
  92. 1. Copy WINA20.386 to the new location. Type the following at the MS-
  93.    DOS command prompt and press ENTER
  94.  
  95.       copy <startupdrive>:\wina20.386 <path>:\wina20.386
  96.  
  97.    where <path> is the drive and directory to which you are moving
  98.    WINA20.386. For example, if you are moving WINA20.386 to your
  99.    Windows SYSTEM subdirectory on drive C, type the following at the
  100.    MS-DOS command prompt and press ENTER:

  102.       copy c:\wina20.386 c:\windows\system\wina20.386
  103.  
  104.     NOTE: If you have MS-DOS 6 Upgrade, substitute MOVE for COPY in
  105.     the command shown above and skip to step 4.
  106.  
  107. 2. Use a text editor, such as MS-DOS Editor, to open your CONFIG.SYS
  108.    file. If you want to use MS-DOS Editor, type the following at the
  109.    MS-DOS command prompt and press ENTER:
  110.  
  111.       edit <startupdrive>:\config.sys
  112.  
  113. 3. Add the following command on a line of its own at the end of your
  114.    CONFIG.SYS file:
  115.  
  116.       switches=/w
  117.    
  118. 4. Save your CONFIG.SYS file. If you're using MS-DOS Editor, choose
  119.    Exit from the File menu. When MS-DOS Editor displays a dialog box
  120.    prompting you to save your file, choose the Yes button or press
  121.    ENTER.

  123. 5. Use the text editor to open your Windows SYSTEM.INI file. (This
  124.    file should be in your Windows directory.)
  125.  
  126. 6. Find the section that begins with the header [386Enh].
  127.  
  128. 7. Add this command under the [386Enh] heading
  129.  
  130.       device=<path>\wina20.386
  131.       
  132.    where <path> specifies the new location of the WINA20.386 file. For
  133.    example, if you want to move the file to your WINDOWS directory,
  134.    add the following command to your Windows SYSTEM.INI file:
  135.    
  136.       device=c:\windows\wina20.386
  137.       
  138. 8. Save your SYSTEM.INI file. If you're using MS-DOS Editor, choose
  139.    Exit from the File menu. When MS-DOS Editor displays a dialog box
  140.    prompting you to save your file, choose the Yes button or press
  141.    ENTER.

  143. 9. Restart your computer by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL.
